Course registration often asks students to make several decisions at once: meet graduation requirements, keep a sequence on track, and choose classes that genuinely interest them. The best schedule is not automatically the most advanced or the most crowded. Start with what remains on the graduation plan, then see where electives and personal interests fit.
Start with courses still needed
Use your latest audit to identify required courses that are unfinished or scheduled for a later term. Check whether a course is offered only in a particular semester or whether it needs to come before another class. If your transcript and audit do not agree, get clarification before treating the requirement as complete.
Look beyond the course title
A catalog description can reveal prerequisites, grade-level limits, whether a class is a full-year sequence, and how the school classifies its credit. Ask whether a proposed elective counts toward a subject-area requirement or only toward total credits; those are not always the same thing. If the class connects to a career pathway or college interest, check whether that connection affects the graduation plan or is simply an additional benefit.
Check the schedule before committing
Before submitting choices, ask your counselor which required courses should take priority if two classes conflict and what happens if a preferred course does not run. Also confirm the school’s process for changing a schedule after the term begins. A clear backup choice makes registration less stressful and helps keep required coursework visible.
